Surviving the First Week

Above - Al Jimi Mall, the big one in Al Ain. Everyone seems to go there at night. Has everything you could think of.

Well, i made it through week one..fewwwu. I hope that is going to be my hardest week, regarding the homesickness and feeling lost. Already i feel better about things, at least for the remainder of the 3 months posting.

I'm still based out of the Hotel Massa, whilst the hotel is nothing to write home about, it does give me somewhere to rest the head and is only 10 minutes from the office. I have attached some photos here of the flat my hosts have organised. It still isn't furnished yet, but i have been applying some pressure for this to happen, and was told to make a list of the furnishings i needed..sounds like a good opportunity to get that plasma wide screen. I want to get into the flat asap, i really think it will help me to get even more stability and a sense of 'home away from home'.

There are 46 stations on the TV, 2 have English languages, the BBC, which has 24 hour updates on all the war-torn fighting in the middle East and Channel 2, which is the movie channel, playing the very average 'B' films from the 1980's. I did stumble across a 3rd channel which had CSI just finishing (series from 4 years ago) and the 2nd episode from series 1 of McLeod's Daughters. this reminded me of FS.

I'm still hardly eating, just with the way the days go, i probably eat once a day and it is usually the Arabic and Lebanese wraps or chicken, very tasty though. The boss here is a very big fella (wide), and loves taking meals at 10pm, at pizza hut or Maccas. I'm trying to turn down his of offers of dinner together as politely as possible, whilst 2 other guys here are always heading to the Ramada Hotel at 11pm for a couple of drinks and to watch the Colombian singers. I went once, 2 beers cost me 40 Dhs or $16 Aus. I have decided that i need to get straight to bed when finishing work, or i am too trashed the next morning...funny, nothing changes.

I was really excited yesterday, i used Skype to call home and was able to have a good chat with Fs and the kids and we could see each other with the web cam. It was pretty good, in that there was bugger all delay, and the image was good too. It was so good to see the family. B1 and B2, are more talkative on the skype than the phone which is nice. B3 was excited and talked about a concert and really wanted me there (FS later told me there isno concert), but he was excited and loved telling me he missed me and loved me. B4 was smiling and calling Dadda the whole time, i could see him trying to jump into the computer where my image from the webcam was displayed.

I joined the gym at the Hilton yesterday also. Whilst i have no idea when i will get there, i am going to try to structure my days a little better to allow time to get there for a swim, pump iron and look at myself in the mirror...that is what you do right? i am also hopeful of meeting some others through the club also.

I am heading to Dubai for a meeting this evening, and have tomorrow off work (Friday weekend) and also the Saturday for a change, it is the Islamic New Year. not sure what i will do, although i will probably try t catch up a little at the office, but am hoping to go out to the Al Ain, sand golf course, apparently a full sized course, all sand...i should be used to the sand from my efforts at Longy G.C. Speaking of which, i am missing not being near the surf, but was glad to see on the realsurf website that it has been very flat, sorry guys.

There are so many interesting things about the UAE, Al Ain, mainly the people. there are over 161 different nationalities living in the UAE. Everyone calls me Mr Nick and all are so friendly. I may shake hands and say hello to the same person 5 times a day in the office, such is their politeness and friendliness.

Weather here at this time of year is great, very sunny, mid 20's everyday. All the locals have complained about how cold it is, and the local Al Ain Times, ran an article about how shivering everyone has been and reminding people to put their heaters on at night. putting it into perspective, i have been wearing nothing more than a collared shirt.

Just read your posts. The bit about looking in on your boys and how you would miss them brought a tear to my eyes. Okay, maybe more than one. Will and B1 had a great time at cricket camp. I'm sure B1 will tell you all about it next chance he gets. And I'm certain the boys are already missing you in playing backyard cricket. You were always an easy wicket!

Sounds like everything is settling down for you over there but it will be good for you to get into the flat.
FS is not happy that you get to do all the furniture shopping so you will have to leave a few corners empty so she can buy a few things if she ends up over there. Your B3 and my B2 (LT) had their first day at kindy together today and had a great time (for the most part), didn't leave each others side the whole day both in red wiggles shirts (life is so simple at that age). The blog site is a great idea RT and I are enjoying checking up on your adventures.

Don't work too hard.

Luv all the T's

Mr Nick,
Enjoyed reading your survival tactics for the first week.

What sort of fresh food can you buy at the mall?
Second week nearly over so how is the work scene coming on?
How do you communicate with your work mates? know anymore
Arabic words yet?

Love,
Sandra

you have achieved so much in so little time..gym, golf, hiker group, running group, skype setup, tv channel decifering, drinks etc...combination of 16 hours days and no food seemed to be working for you! love the photos, i like the flat's arabic influenced architecture but think it needs some colour...happy for your company to fly me over to decorate! LC, IC & WC are all great...surf is freezing here but LC and WC still grin and bear it...anything to get out of house-work. LC is working hard, has till end of month to retain major account..any advertising agencies in AUE? Take care of yourself, apply the sunscreen, don't forget to eat, drive carefully (I am the daughter of SS)and have fun! Love CC.

Mr Nick,
You did say you were going there for work didn't you. What with all the time spent at shopping malls, going on tours, joining gyms, playing golf, drinking beers, watching b grade films and tele from your hotel room, sounds more like a holiday. If it wasn't the 10 page essays and learning a 2nd language, it might well be.
Jokes aside, the writing is great. If you keep this up though there won't be anything to tell when you get back.
You haven't missed much in the way of surf, its been freezing. About 15C or so i'm told, my board still has dust on it.
Have a great holiday.

Slick

Good to hear that your adjusting to the culture there and keeping yourself occupied. Working 16 hours a day how is that any different to what you were doing in Oz? Oh sorry it was 18 hrs a day here but only 5 days per week. The office is just not the same without the chrome dome on full display. Enough of the jokes your presence and occasional burst of fine lyrics is being missed by all.

Dave's on the spot with the surf it’s been bloody freezing about 14.5 degress.Went for one out little Narra last weekend early and almost turned around and went in after getting half way out. Would get an ice cream headache every duck dive. Had to get out after about half an hour my feet were like blocks of ice. I just can’t bring myself to don the steamer in the middle of summer it’s just something that is not done. The dust build up on Dave’s board is so thick you could use it as a mattress.

Give Nelson a call regarding Gym etiquette he is the doin (I’m not quite sure if that’s how you spell it) of how to look like you know what your doing. I can imagine his tips would be as follows. 1. make sure someone is watching you at all times 2. The guns of Navarone must I repeat must be on display at all times. 3. Always make out that you have some kind of injury and that you are working through the pain and 4.The pecks of steel are flexed at all times. This is guaranteed to work 60% of the time all the time.

Got a big day planned for Australia Day this Friday. Going back to the old school celebrations BBQ, Cricket and beers. We will miss your unorthodox bowling and sledging on the field. I have been unable to contact you on your mobile; it goes to message bank each time. Will still try and call on Friday. Have an $8 beer for the boys as we will be having a few for you. I will dedicate a couple of mystery balls to the slick.

Talk soon

Good to hear your settling in and getting the furniture sorted. At least doing some running over there you will be in fine form for the Manly Beach run when you get back. SF will be jealous, he will be running as soon as that whipper snipper wound on his shin heals (do they have courses on how to use a whipper snipper at Marsupial?)
B1 and B2 had a great time playing cricket in our backyard today (you owe us 6 tennis balls!!) Take care
